Jennifer Burke, Chapter 1 Reflections

Chapter 1
3 Ideas for Learning
Before reading this chapter, I did not realize that most things that make our live more covenient can be considered technology. This chapter reiterated the use of computer technology for theme units. It was also reiterated that it can be very difficult to find websites that are ideal regarding subject and grade.
2 New Ideas for Integration
First, one can utilize a computer drawing program to draw skeletons for a bone unit. Also, students can dictate stories as the teacher types in large font.
1 Main Concern
My main concern is integrating enough technology to meet the changing times.

  1. Jennifer,
I was a kindergarten teacher for two years, and I believe it is really challenging to meet the changing technological times. Technology is being updated daily, which makes it very challenging for schools and teachers to stay in recent times. I think if we are creating lessons with the technology standards and integrating technology within the curriculum with the given resourses, we are doing the best that we know how. Our school only has one computer lab and it is used for mostly testing. It seems that when I want to do a big project, there is always some sort of testing in the computer lab. This makes teaching technology very challenging. This last year, I applied for a SMART board and was gifted it this fall. It has been a huge part of my teaching technlogy. If we do what we know best, that is what school admnistration expects.

  2. I have mixed feelings about integrating technology. I know we need to provide our students with opportunities that will allow them to succeed through these times where current technology is playing a bigger role in the world, but I also believe that students are already spending plenty of time playing video games, computer games and watching TV. I find comfort in reminding myself to stay focused on creating a balance for my students, and giving them a little bit of everything. I try my best to expose them to art, science, social studies, language arts, math and technology by intertwining all the subjects so they get a little bit of each subject in every lesson plan. At our school we only have one computer lab, and one weekly time, so I am hoping to find ways besides using the computer to integrate technology into my teaching. I would love to have a SMART board like Jamie, but until I am able to get one, I will be on the hunt for creative ways to use technology in the classroom.

  3. Jennifer,
Short and concise! I would like to hear more reflection on the chapter's main ideas and what you think about it. Perhaps next time, you could also explain the project ideas more fully so others can try them. I would like to know more about what you think from the "real" teacher's point of view.
